Two types of teas have a prominent presence in the lair of AjF and sLk. Kombucha is one, and the other is a rooibos. Specifically, Marco Polo Rouge by Mariage Frères. It is the most amazing tea, smells and tastes like herbal heaven.
Rooibos comes from a bush plant that grows in Cedarberg of the Western Cape Province in South Africa. It has a high level of antioxidants, and is caffeine-free. Rooibos can only come from South Africa, states an Intellectual Property Laws Amendment Bill of 2008, just like how champagne can only come from Champagne, France; cognac can only come from Cognac, France, and port can only come from Portugal.
When an established tea company such as Mariage Frères gets its hands on rooibos, extremely tasty things come out of it: Marco Polo Rouge being one of them, there’s also Nils Rouge (Red Nile, scented with spices from the old Oriental trade, citrus and marigolds) and Rouge Bourbon (flavored with bourbon vanilla).
Teas by Mariage Frères is really meant to be drunken out of fine China with your pinky sticking up; it’s just how such delicate flavors should be experienced. AJ likes his with a few drops of alfalfa, in either a small Japanese tea cup or in an Evian bottle. I think it would be delicious with cream, as it is a bit spicy and nutty. Kombucha, on the other hand, has to be drunken out of something more rugged and portable. Kombucha is fizzy, refreshing, and so full of life, that it is best enjoyed in the great outdoors, preferably under the sun so you could enjoy letting it quench your thirst.
Kombucha is not really a tea at all. It’s actually a combination of symbiotic yeast and probiotics that grow in a mixture of sugar and black tea. Ref Conscious Choice article

AJ goes to the hospital for tests every six weeks or so. Sometimes the results would be cause for celebration, other times the results would cast a cloud in an otherwise blue sky. Why do we care so much about these snapshots of our health? Camera pictures are not always glamorous, even for the photogenic ones there are days when the lens just doesn’t do us justice…. but hey, that doesn’t mean you’re ugly for life.
Our answer to these tests is experimentation with alternative methods.
According to Jonathan Treasure’s article for The Journal of the American Herbalist Build 2003, “serum creatinine is commonly measured as an index of glomerular function. Broadly speaking serum creatinine varies inversely with the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), other things being equal. A number of non-renal factors may affect creatinine levels, ranging from heavy dietary meat ingestion, medications including glucocorticoids and cimetidine, and muscle mass decrease in chronic illness. There is also a small but variable degree of proximal tubule secretion of creatinine, which declines as GFR decreases and which may confound interpretations of creatinine values. Nevertheless, creatinine remains a simple single measure test of nephron function. Units of measurement vary in laboratory reports, upper limits for a normal serum concentration in men are 1.2mg/dL (conventional units), or 110micromol/L (SI units). Values for women are -85% men’s values, at 1.02mg/dL or 93.5micromol/L.”
Jonathan Treasure, an English medical herbalist currently residing in the town of Ashland whose bio can be found here, discussed in his 2003 article case studies in which Urtica dioica L. and Urtica urens L. (stinging nettles) were used clinically to treat patients with serious renal challenges.
Using this information as a starting point, AJ found a tincture named Kidney Support Compound by David Winston’s company Herbalist Alchemist. AJ initially planned to take it for a month and monitor its effects via serum creatinine test, but changed his mind after consulting with Doc Misha; she mentioned conflicting and repetitive ingredients. The herbal remedy prescribed by Misha consists of alternating use of Six Flavors Teapill (六味地黃丸) and Nine Flavors Teapill

AJ has been receiving acupuncture for the past month with Doc Misha. I found her strangely reminiscent of my old friend Gilbert… but that’s very strange because there has got to be about at least 20 years age difference and, well, Gilbert’s asian and Misha’s caucasian.

When interference-free and in good balance, I tend to have “accurate cravings.” Meaning, if my body needs a certain nutrient or a certain type of food, I will crave exactly that. On the other hand, when not aligned and resonating with oneself, the opposite occurs. For example, often people have insatiable appetites for oily foods (e.g. deep-fried) when their bodies are in fact needing EPA and DHA. Similarly, sugar and starch cravings are often the result of protein-deprivation. It is both interesting and rewarding to notice the quiet tendencies, those subtle messages you can receive from your own body, when you would take a moment and simply feel.
So what does this have to do with burdock roots cooked with the Japanese way of kinpira (金平), which means “saute and simmer”? Nothing really, just that I’ve been craving it lately.
There are many therapeutic uses of burdock (articum lappa) roots. Mainly, it is a diuretic; it purifies by removing toxins from the blood. It is also a gentle laxative and help eradicate uric acid. Some of the active ingredients of burdock are polyacetylenes, which are known to be effective antibacterials and antifungals. Burdock enhances the performance of many of the organs which purify the body and eliminate toxins or waste (like the kidneys, liver, colon, etc). The Chinese considers it an aphrodisiac. Some research indicates that this plant may be effective as an anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant. Its cancer-curing properties are being researched in Russia and India. Historically, the seeds of the burdock plants were compressed to make a mixture that was effective in cleansing the bloodstream, easing pain from arthritis, and treating gout, rheumatism, ulcers, acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Incorporation of the burdock root extract is not uncommon in hair, scalp and anti-acne products.
Most importantly, it tastes yummy. Gobo is an integral ingredient to Japanese cuisine. When pickled, burdock root is a vivid orange not attributed to oxidation or any other natural process but to artificial coloring (when I was a child I actually nicknamed it “evil carrot”) and is used in many sushi rolls (often those with heavier ingredient because it balances out greasiness). Gobo is a pale brownish yellow when fresh. Roots harvested in spring are the best, because its nutrient-packed skin is still supple, you do not need to peel it away like you would those that are harvested in the other three seasons.
Kinpira gobo is delicious and nutritious. Here is my personal variation. Much liberty can be taken with the peripheral ingredients and portions, it all comes down to personal preference. But once you find your ingredients and portions, stick with them. Consistency is key; when it comes to kinpira, even the slightest difference in ingredient quantity makes noticeable difference in taste.
Julienne two portions gobo and one portion of carrots. Heat up a pan with oil (could be grape seed, olive, or sesame) and saute the gobo and carrots until surface is glistening and somewhat softened. Add soy sauce and mirin (cooking wine + sugar will also do), and simmer for as long as it takes to cook until your preferred consistency is achieved. Various peripheral ingredients could be added, such as garlic, red chili flakes, and white toasted sesame. To take the edge off the stickiness of mirin, I like to add a splash of organic balsamic vinegar to the simmering mix. Also, keep in mind that carrots cook a lot faster than gobo. Enjoy!

I did some research on organic food delivery service after I tasted these wild berries La Bruja and I found off a bluff near Stinson Beach. These blackberries were completely wild, untampered, and absolutely delicious. The moment my tongue came in contact with the little fruits, it was like an miniature supernova of pure epicurean bliss right there on top of my tongue. Compared to these babies, blackberries from supermarkets are oversized genetically engineered anomalies that taste more like porous, pulpous jellyfish left in the sun all day sprinkled with artificial flavor powder. Aj wasn’t there to taste these berries, but he’d have most definitely have done in excitement everything short of falling off the bluff and appreciated them with his whole chef heart. I realized that the produce I’ve been consuming is pure trash, so I set out to research my future organic produce box. Here are a few companies I found that deliver to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Eat With the Seasons
Planet Organics
Farm Fresh to You
Village Organics
Spud
and here are a few comprehensive companies that accept internet orders:

AjF went for a session with our resident QE practitioner today. For the sake of privacy, we’ll refer to her simply as la Bruja. It is a term of endearment really, invoking not the dark, drab image of an old witch with a crooked nose and dirty long fingernails zipping around her cauldron on a broomstick, but rather a white wizard properly armed with sprays of nectar essences (flower essences and essential oils) who cruises around on a hoola hoop (Yes, we all live together).
QE stands for quantum energetics. It triggers the body’s natural ability to heal itself. La Bruja’s gentle yet precise tapping on AjF’s body sent him off to a deep sleep within ten minutes of their session; AjF konked out for three hours thereafter. “La Bruja knocked me out! She was spinning me like a record and playing me like a mixer!” he exclaimed, notably refreshed and in mild disbelieve.
P.s. Despite his claims to fame, AjF is not Homer Simpson, nor does he resemble the yellow guy in any way.
